Swamp Story

I walked across a swamp

I walked through the reeds

Thinking of you

I fell to my knees

The ground dried up

I couldn’t move my feet

I waited there

for as long as I could see

A loon at my side

Trying to turn my eyes

To a distant white stone

reflecting the summer sky

I waited in the reeds and dirt

Hoping it would clear

Reaching for the stone

 it all disappeared

I walked across a swamp

I walked through the reeds

Thinking of you

I fell to my knees

The ground dried up

I couldn’t move my feet

I waited there

for as long as I could see

The chest crescendo

Almost giving up

Almost being perfect

Almost enough

The blue and clouds

Could be so soft

It’s meant to last

Needs to stop

I could be there now

It was suppose to pause with me

Clear and dry itself out

Cement so it won’t-repeat

Sing itself out loud

Drain under the reeds

Low tide summer drought

Why let me be free

Why let me be free

I walked across a swamp

I walked through the reeds

Thinking of you

I fell to my knees

The ground dried up

I couldn’t move my feet

I waited there

for as long as I could see
